Vitold Ashurak Buried Under White-Red-White Flag

Hundreds of people came to the funeral of the political prisoner, the BPF Party National Board member.
European and U.S. politicians and diplomats also pay tribute to Vitold Ashurak.

Sean Haughey

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Godparent for Vitold Ashurak:

Chara (Dear friend),

I was very sorry to learn of the death of  Vitold Ashurak in prison and I wish to send my sincere condolences to his family, friends and supporters on his passing.

Vitold was a political prisoner and the circumstances of his death must remain suspicious.

All who knew him  can be very proud of the stance he took in standing up for democracy and fundamental human rights in Belarus. He paid the ultimate price for this and his name will be forever remembered for his courage and bravery.

His family are assured of my prayers and sympathy at this difficult time.

Julie Fisher

U.S. Ambassador to Belarus:

Deepest condolences to the family and friends of Vitold Ashurak, whose wrongful imprisonment and senseless death demand accountability. He died in the struggle for freedom and a brighter future for Belarus.

EU Delegation to Belarus

Belarusian political activist Vitold Ashurak died in prison in Shklou at the age of 50. In January 2021, Mr Ashurak was sentenced to five years of imprisonment in a politically motivated trial that was closed to the public. He was recognised a political prisoner. We send our deepest condolences to Mr Ashurak’s family, friends and all who knew him. May good memories help you through this difficult time. The European Union reinforces its demand for the immediate release of all political prisoners and arbitrarily detained persons. It will seek to hold to account the perpetrators of human rights violations in Belarus.

Ingrida Simonyte

Prime Minister of Lithuania:

Saddened & infuriated to learn that Vitold Ashurak, one of 406 political prisoners in Belarus, passed away in Shklov prison while serving a 5-year sentence. May his soul rest in Freedom. May the Hague Tribunal serve justice for him.
